The Porsche Cayman 987 (sometimes referred to as the 987c) was designed by Hong Kong born, Pinky Lai, who worked his way to head of design at Porsche through Ford in Germany and then BMW. The car is currently assembled in Uusikaupunki, Finland by Valmet Automotive, but the production contract will be assumed by Austrian automotive producer Magna Steyr Fahrzeugtechnik of Graz sometime in 2012-2013.

Those who believe the car has been named after the islands reknowned for their reputation as a tax haven and off-shore banking concern should not be betting on that notion any time soon. In reality, the car was monikered in the alternate spelling of the "caiman" - a very speedy reptile, long and low to the ground, that hails from the same family as the alligator - this is where the islands derived their name also. The common confusion over this matter will put you at an advantage the next time somebody wants to put money on it. On the same day that the first Caymans arrived at dealerships for sale, Porsche adopted four caimans at Stuttgart's Wilhelma Zoo.

There is also some confusion on the numbering and the "nommenklature" of this car. Porsche's Boxster 986 (a top-down roadster) was succeeded and sequentially designated the 987; However, the first model released bearing the 987 model series number was a coupé and is called a "Cayman".
